岩山の頂の大天使ミカエルと織田信長

岐阜城での「空中庭園」の可能性を申し上げた前回を受けて、やはりもう一回だけ、余談を続けさせて下さい。

と申しますのは、この話、場合によっては途方もない（世界史的な）広がりをもつことが予想されるからです。

バビロンの空中庭園の想像画

まず世界史で「空中庭園」と言えば、原点は古代世界の七不思議のひとつ、バビロンの空中庭園にさかのぼります。

現在、その空中庭園の実像については、バビロン遺跡（バグダッド南方９０ｋｍ）中の４３ｍ×３０ｍの遺構や文献史料から、れんが造りの “角錐型の段状建築物に設けられた庭園” ではなかったか、という説が有力のようです。

“段状” という言葉を聞きますと、岐阜城の「四階建て楼閣」もまた段状の土台（草創期の天守台）を利用していた可能性を申し上げたばかりです。

時空を超えた、思わぬ符合に、早速、頭がクラクラし始めます。
　
　
しかも信長の岐阜城は、山頂に天守、山麓に空中庭園をもつ楼閣を備えていたとすれば、その景観は宣教師らキリスト教徒の目から見れば、まるでバベルの塔と空中庭園という、伝説どおりのバビロンを見たような印象だったとも思われます。

どれも偶然の一致だったとは言え、そうした “符合” をもたらしたのは、やはり織田信長という人物の「天」に対する格別な思いと、建造物のスペクタクル性（高石垣や蛇石など）を好んだ独特の気質だったと申せましょうか…。
　
　
そこで今回の記事のメインは、岐阜城は、時空を超えた偶然の一致が、さらにもう一つあったかもしれないというお話です。

岐阜城（金華山）山頂の岩

話の中心になるのは、ご覧のように山頂に突き出た “岩” です。

金華山は険しい岩山として知られる山ですが、この岩、当時の城絵図にも描かれたもので、天守はこの岩の脇に天守台を築いて建てられています。

つまり厳密に申せば、天守は金華山の「最頂点」にあったわけではなく、わざわざこの岩を避けて建てたことになります。

そこで先程の空中庭園のように、世界史的な観点から「岩山の最頂点」を見ていけば、宗教や神話のからんだ岩山がいくつも思い出され、例えば、各地の岩山の聖堂に掲げられた「大天使ミカエル」の像が想起されるのではないでしょうか。

大天使ミカエル（聖ミカエル）

旧約聖書に登場するミカエルは、キリスト教においてはラファエル、ガブリエルと並ぶ大天使の一人とされました。
特に、サタンと闘った軍装の守護天使というイメージが強く、そのため山頂や建物の屋根に像が掲げられたと云います。

しかも、来日したフランシスコ・ザビエルがミカエルに日本の守護を祈願したことから、当時、ミカエルは日本の守護聖人ともされました。

「でも、それが織田信長とどう関係するのか」とお感じになられるかもしれませんが、櫻井成廣先生はかつて信長の最後の城・安土城天主に関して、こんな指摘をしたことがあります。

その壁面装飾については珍しくかつ重要な史料がある。それは井上宗和氏が「銅」という業界誌に発表されたもので、安土城天主を建築した岡部又右衛門以言（これとき）の「安土御城御普請覚え書」である。
子孫の以之（これゆき）という人が持っていて、名古屋空襲で焼失したが、記憶によって原本どおりに書いて井上氏に贈られたものだということであって、その古い写本の世に出ることが切望される。
それによると安土城天主木部は防禦のため後藤平四郎の製造した銅板で包まれていて、「赤銅、青銅にて被われたる柱のばてれんの絵など刻みたるに、塗師首（ぬしかしら）のうるしなどにてととのえ、そのさま新奇なれば信長公大いに喜ばれ、一同に小袖など拝領さる」という文句もあるという。

安土城天主の外壁が「赤」「青」など色とりどりであった話は『フロイス日本史』で知られて来ましたが、上の文章によれば、それらは赤銅や青銅に透漆（すきうるし／半透明の漆）を施した珍しい意匠であって、しかもそこには「ばてれんの絵」が銅板彫刻されていた、というのです。

これが真実だとすると、従来の数々の復元画はその点の修正を迫られかねない話ですが、それにしても「ばてれんの絵」とはいったい何を描いた絵だったのでしょう。

まさか宣教師そのものを描くことはなかったでしょうから、それは聖母子像だったのでしょうか？ それとも聖人たちの姿でしょうか？

おそらくはそうではなく、統一戦争を進めた織田信長が、安土山の山頂の天主に描くキリスト教のモチーフとして最もふさわしいのは、「大天使ミカエル」ではなかったか、と思われてなりません。

と申しますのは、軍装の大天使ミカエルが「日本の守護聖人」になったという話を聞いたならば、信長は大いに納得して、その像を自らの天主の柱に刻む、ということも大いにありえたような気がするからです。

そうしますと、岐阜城の山頂の “岩” もまた、大天使ミカエルが天から降臨する場として実にふさわしく、ここでもまた、時空をまたいだ偶然の一致が起きたことになりそうです。…

思えば、『信長公記』に記された巨石「蛇石（じゃいし）」は、なぜ安土山（安土城）に運び上げる必要があったのでしょうか。

一万余の人数で昼夜三日がかりで運び上げたとありますが、その狙いを信長は語らなかったようで、『信長公記』は何も伝えていません。

ひょっとしてひょっとすると、信長は、安土山の山頂に “岩” が無いことに不興を示し、それを見た津田信澄が配下を動員して運搬し、信長に献上したのかもしれません。!!

ところが肝心の蛇石そのものは、現在のところ、滋賀県が続けてきた発掘調査においても、城内のどこからも（天主台の地中からも）発見されず、真相は闇の中です。

ただし岐阜城の例からしますと、蛇石は天主台とは別の所に屹立して据えられ、その後に崩落した、という可能性もあったのかもしれません。…
