Ｂさん「へぇ７階建てですか、木造では限界ですよね…（何故そんなに大きくしたのか）」と、さも理由を聞きたそうな表情。

つい２、３日前も、こんな質問を仕事先の知人から受けて、改めて「天守（天主）」という建造物が抱えている根源的な問題を感じました。

つまり「そもそも何なのか？」という（一般社会からの）素朴な疑問にズバッと答えきれないハンデを抱えた状態……言い換えれば、天守（天主）の核心部分が今もってブラックボックスに入ったまま、日本中で城郭談義がなされたり、天守の復元計画が論議されたりしているという、不思議な状況が日々続いています。

織田信長像

当ブログはこの五ヶ月ほど、集中的に安土城天主の “再発見” をめぐる仮説を記事にしてまいりましたが、その中で、最大かつ最後の謎として残ったのが、天主中心部に構築された「高さ１２間余の蔵」に、信長はいったい何を収蔵するつもりだったのか？ という問題です。

この「蔵」に何を納めるかは、おそらく安土城天主そのものがどういう性格の建物だったのか、ひいては「天守」は何を目的に誕生したのか、それがなぜ七重もの規模を必要とするに至ったのか、という様々な疑問の解消につながるように思われます。

あえて申し上げるなら、信長は天主（天守）を創造しておきながら、実は、そうした “天主の核心” をベールに包んだまま、本能寺で死んでしまった ――　

このことが結局、２１世紀の今日になっても、「天守閣って何ですか？」という日本人全体の意識（認識）に影を落としているように思われてならないのです。
　
　
さて、そこで例えば “織田信長と収蔵品” という連想をしてみた場合、最も大勢の方の頭に浮かぶのは、かの有名な「蘭奢待（らんじゃたい）」ではないでしょうか？

正倉院宝物「蘭奢待」


蘭奢待は、天下一の名香として東大寺の正倉院に秘蔵されていたのを、いちやく天下に踊り出た信長が強引に切り取らせた、という話で知られる香木ですが、この事件が起きたのは天正二年、つまり安土城の築城が始まる２年前のことでした。

蘭奢待とは黄熟香の別名で、慶長年間のころから一般に使われた名称である。
この三字の中に、東大寺の名が隠しこまれている。
誰が考え出したか知らないが、当時よりそのことは知られていたとみえて、香道ではこの香のことを別名「東大寺」とも呼んでいるという。

歴史ファンですでに読まれた方も多いようですが、この本、正倉院とその宝物の驚くべき実態（→大半の宝物が散逸したり入れ替わったりして来たこと！）を紹介していて、特に歴代の天下人が、いかにその権力を使って正倉院の扉をコジ開け、宝物を私物化して来たかが詳しく描かれております。

奈良時代に、光明皇太后の名において東大寺に奉献された宝物は、約七四〇点であったが、そのうち今日まで伝存している宝物は、わずかに一五〇点ほどにすぎない。
正倉院に現存する宝物は、古裂やガラス玉類のような「塵芥」を除いて、一万点余りにものぼる。その九千数百点の宝物類は、いったい、いつどのようなところで作られて、どういう経緯をたどって正倉院に入ったのか …
　
　
この本で由水先生は、「勅封」で守られたはずの正倉院が、実際は「歴代権力者たちの開封」を受け、嵯峨天皇、藤原道長、鳥羽上皇と後白河法皇、源頼朝、足利義満・義政、そして織田信長、徳川家康、明治天皇といった歴史的な人物たちに開けられた例を列挙しています。

例えば平安三筆の一人であり、独裁的な権力を手にした嵯峨天皇は、国際的な名宝とも言うべき王羲之や王献之の書をはじめ、聖武天皇のゆかりの品や、宮中を飾る大量の屏風類を倉から出させ、わずかの金銭で買い取ってしまったそうです。

こうした正倉院の宝物を自由自在に使うことによって、何びとといえども追従できない文化的荘厳をおこない、超越者の立場を顕示したのである。
（中略）
真に天下を制し権力者になったものだけが、はじめて正倉院の宝物を手にすることができるという、伝統的な権力象徴思想とでもいうべきものが、このとき以来、日本の政治権力者の間で、近代に至るまで受け継がれてゆくことになるのである。
　
　
様々な権力者が正倉院の扉を開けたのち、いよいよ信長による開封（蘭奢待の切り取り）がどのように行われたかは、『天正截香記』（天正二年三月二八日の年預浄実の手記）に詳しく書かれていて、本の中では口語訳で紹介されています。

それを読みますと実際は、寺領の安堵と引き換えに蘭奢待を拝見したい、という信長の書状を塙直政と筒井順慶が持参し、それを寺側が受け取ったものの、返事は「今宵までに」と言われて大騒ぎになったようです。

そんな騒ぎをよそに、信長自身は四日後には多聞山城まで来てしまい、結局、自らの名代を寺に遣わし、蘭奢待を城内の泉殿に運ばせて、そこで仏師に切り取らせたのでした。

それからしばらくして、信長自身が倉まで出向いてきて、倉の中を一覧して、大仏詣でに行かれた。
その道中、「紅沈香も天下無双の名香だから、端の倉などに入れておかないで、蘭奢待と一緒に入れるべきである。囲碁盤はもとの北倉においておけばよい。また、後でわかりにくくなるので、櫃には別々に香の銘を書いて入れておくように」と、佐々間衛門を引き返させて、寺門へ伝言させた。
　
　
かくして信長は、先例に構わず、わずか数日で蘭奢待を切り取らせ、正倉院の内部（北倉・中倉・南倉の三つ）を実見した上で、いちいち宝物の置き方にまで注文を付けようとしていたのです。

この時、信長は頭の中でいったい何を目論んでいたのでしょうか？

その２年後には、信長は「太平ノ兆（きざし）」と詠わせた安土山に築城を開始し、やがて建物の中心部に「高さ１２間余の蔵」をもつ天主の建造を始める、というタイミングだったのですから…。
