まるで動物園！？安土城天主の木像群

十二支と方位

十二支はご承知のとおり、当時の人々にとって、年や時刻だけでなく、方位を示す記号としても日常的に馴染みのあったものです。

そしてその木像が、天主内部にどのように設置されたかを想像してみますと、まず「木像」と書かれている点で、類似の例として、神社仏閣の軒下に彫刻された獅子や獏（ばく）などの彩色像が思い当たります。

これらは木鼻を彫刻・彩色したもので、もとより頭の上の位置にありますから、例えば、こうした類いが建物内の廊下の長押上（柱）などに突出して取り付けられたとすれば、とりたてて通行の邪魔にはなりませんし、遠くからも良く見えたことでしょう。

ではその状況を、仮に『天守指図』の二重目で考えてみますと…

このように南側（図では上）の二重目入口付近から、東側を通って北側に回り込む廊下に沿って、巳（蛇／へび）辰（龍／りゅう）卯（兎／うさぎ）寅（虎／とら）丑（牛／うし）子（鼠／ねずみ）亥（猪／いのしし）という風に、計７種の木像が、柱の上部に並んでいた可能性がありそうです。

それらはきっと、見るからに壮観で、忘れられない印象を残したのではないでしょうか。また、こうした目印があれば、黒漆で統一された居室空間も、迷わずに歩くことが出来たのかもしれません。

かくして、大胆不敵な木像群がずらっと並んでいた上に、各部屋の障壁画には、様々な生き物も描かれていたわけで、図にそれらを書き加えますと…

信長自身の御座を含む南西奥の各部屋には、金地の襖絵に鵞鳥（がちょう）や雉（きじ）の親子が描かれ、棚には鳩（はと）の絵があって、このような空間にもし現代人が足を踏み入れたなら、「ここはバーチャルな動物園か」とつぶやきかねない状況です。

これも織田信長という人物と、住居としての安土城天主の、ユニークな一面を物語る特徴だと言わざるをえません。
