続・七重の層塔型「屈折」天守と「いちばん小さな天守」をめぐる異論

前回の会津若松城「七重」天守の推定イラストでは、窓の配置について、ちょっと違和感を感じた方もいらっしゃったのではないでしょうか。

と申しますのは、このように初重と二重目が同大で建ち上がった天守は、ほとんどが初重と二重目の窓の位置を、互い違いにずらして設けたものばかりで、イラストのように窓の位置を縦にそろえたケースは、ごく部分的にしか見られなかったからです。
　
　
しかし前々回に引用させていただいた平井聖先生の考察のように、層塔型の要素をもつ七重天守が実在した場合、そこには蒲生氏郷の「創意」が大きく関わっていたと思われてなりません。

その創意を斟酌するなら、「天守をもっと整然とした形で造型してみたい」というものであったはずでしょう。

そういう文人大名の発想のもとでは、従前の手法を捨てて、窓の配置まで「整然と並べてみたい」という渇望が勝ったのではあるまいか… などと勝手に推量しまして、イラストのように描いてみた次第です。

さて、こうなりますと問題は、＜層塔型天守の誕生と普及＞の経緯をどう考えればいいのか、ということになるわけですが、「普及」の方については、当サイトでは、徳川幕藩体制のもとで天守が城下町の中心に屹立するようになって、初めて四方正面が意識され、諸大名が（徳川将軍の天守にならって）採用したものだろうと申し上げて来ました。
　
　
一方、「誕生」の方に関しては、私なんぞが以前からずっと気になって来たのが、藤堂高虎（とうどう たかとら）時代の宇和島城天守です。（上図の右側／大竹正芳先生の復原図にもとづく略式イラスト）

この天守は諸先生方の復元研究によって、外観はかなり複雑かつ未整理な印象であったことが判っているものの、その実態として、天守本体の初重の平面形が真四角！ 正方形になっていた点がたいへん興味深いのです。

と申しますのも、これを建造した高虎が、朝鮮出兵を経て、その後に丹波亀山城で「史上初」と言われる層塔型天守を築いたのですから、「誕生」の芽は、この辺りにあったのだと申し上げてもいいはずでしょう。
　
　
ところがこの度、それに先駆けた蒲生氏郷の会津若松城「七重」天守もあったとなりますと、実はこちらの天守も「平面形は正方形でありながらも外観が層塔型になりきれていない」という点では、ともに共通している（！）わけなのです。

つまり、ここに何か、層塔型天守の「誕生」をめぐる未解明のキーファクターがありそうな気がするものの、今のところは何なのか見当もつきません。

また冒頭の七重のイラストを見ていて、我ながら「屈折ピラミッドみたいだ」と感じまして、ちょっとウィキペディアを覗いてみますと、傾斜角度が途中で変わっていることの理由としては…

●勾配が急過ぎて危険なため（崩壊の危険、玄室にかかる重量過多）角度を途中で変更した
●建造中に王が病気になったので、完成を急ぐため高さの目標を下げた
●これが完成形であり、下エジプトと上エジプトの合一を象徴している

などとバラバラで、こちらも理由がよく分からない様子です。

しかもこの屈折ピラミッドを経て、古代エジプトでは、より「整然とした」ギザの大ピラミッドの建造に至るわけですから、層塔型天守とピラミッド、けっこう浅からぬ縁があるのではないでしょうか。…
　
　
では最後に、このところ「七重」「九重」と景気のいい話が続きましたので、逆にグーンと小さな天守の話をさせていただきましょう。

最近、別の用件で「五重塔の心柱」に関する本を図書館であれこれと漁っていたところ、ふとご覧のページが目に入りまして、アリャっ…と我が身の不勉強を思い知ったところです。

と申しますのは、国宝指定の五重塔の中には、このように高さが４～５ｍしかないものが含まれていて、しかもそれらは、いわゆる設計時の「雛形」とは言い切れない存在なのだ（！…）ということを、今の今まで把握していなかったからです。

ご覧の海龍王寺（奈良市）の五重小塔は、奈良時代の建立で、内部が箱造りになっていて、そこに仏舎利か経典を納めたらしいと言われています。つまりこれも立派に五重塔であったわけです。（失礼）

一方、元興寺極楽坊（奈良市）の五重小塔は、反対に、内部まで精巧につくられていて、そのため中に通常サイズの舎利容器や経典を納めることは出来ないそうです。

となると設計時の雛形かと言えば、そうでもない事情を抱えているようで、そのあたりを本の著者、おなじみの建築史家で建築家の藤森照信先生は…

ではいったい造塔の目的は何なのか。これについては、従来ふたつの仮説が提示されてきた。
ひとつは、建築前につくられた「建築模型」であるとの説。（中略）いかにもありそうだけど、残念ながらこの小塔とじっさいに建てられた大塔とはかなりちがっていた。
（中略）
致命的なのは大塔と小塔の側柱の位置が一致しないこと。大塔の礎石はいまも跡地に保存されていて、側柱の位置が正確に決定でき、それは安政の実測図ともよく一致する。ひるがえって小塔はどのように拡大しても、この礎石上にぴったりおさまるようには建てられない。

第二の仮説は、小塔院に安置されていたとするもの。
小塔院は、大塔と伽藍中軸線をはさんで左右対称の位置にあり、この堂内に五重小塔が本尊として置かれていたと考える。

という風に、「建築模型」説はかなり弱く、かつてこの五重小塔は本堂の一隅に安置されていて、「小塔院」という専用のお堂のような名前の建物にあったかと思いきや、目撃証言はない、とのことです。ならばいったい何のための… という謎の国宝なのです。

ということで、では「天守の雛形」はどうなのだ？と考えた時、自分なんぞはどうも昔から「雛形は着工前に城主に見せるため」とか「大工棟梁が修理の最善の方法を探るため」等々といった伝承や説明に、本当か… それだけのために… 絵図面ではダメだったのか… と引っかかってきた感覚が、一気にぶり返して来たのです。
　
　
ひょっとすると、五重小塔のごとく、天守の雛形にも、立派に天守に準ずる格や位置づけが与えられた可能性はないのか…

また製作時期で天守の創建や修理とおおよそ符合する伝承があったとしても、それは例えば、「工事期間中の天守の身代わり」というような意味が込められた可能性はなかったのだろうか…

等々と、あの人気の姫路城「天空の白鷺」を造れなかった時代の人々を案ずる、余計な心配やお節介が、あれこれと頭の中を駆け巡ってしまうのです。
