決して領民に見せるための建築ではなかったということ

小和田哲男『城と秀吉』１９９６年 ／ いわゆる「見せる城」論の原点

年度リポートの完成はまだちょっとだけ時間をいただきたく、前回の＜世界の中でのニッポンの「天守」＞というテーマについては、是非とも付け加えたき事柄もありまして、それはおなじみの小和田哲男先生の「見せる城」論との関係です。

秀吉の築城史と豊臣覇業史という視点で注目されるのが、「戦う城」から「見せる城」へという変化である。
少なくとも、大坂城までは「戦う城」という位置付けが可能である。事実、大坂冬の陣・夏の陣での大坂方の戦いぶりをみても、そのことは明らかである。
しかし、関白の政庁として築かれた聚楽第からは、もっぱら、豪華さを前面に出して相手を威圧する方向へと転換している。
見せる城、すなわち「見栄の城郭」の出現が “桃山文化” の極地ともいわれる豪壮華麗な城郭建築を生み出したのである。
　
　
この小和田先生の著書では、普請狂とも言われる豊臣秀吉の築城手法（戦略）について考察がなされましたが、この本で打ち出された「見せる城」論は、その後も様々な場で話題となり、日本の城に関する考え方の一つのベースとなった感があります。

一方、直近では、いわゆる「土の城」をめぐる長年の諸研究を経て、西股総生先生の「城の本質は悪あがきである」という名言も飛び出して来ていて、さながら「土の城 vs 見せる城」の相克（確執）こそ、戦国時代から安土桃山時代にかけての、我が国の城の最重要テーマであったことが浮き彫りになって来たようです。

となりますと、天守そのものを「見せる城」の重要アイテムと考える場合、それは必ずしも豊臣秀吉に始まったというより、その前の織田信長の城を含めて考えてもよいのではないでしょうか。…

姫路城大天守の修理後の真っ白い姿を、驚きをもって伝えたニュース

さて、今年は、平成の大修理を行っている姫路城大天守が姿を現し始め、そのあまりの白さから「白鷺城ならぬ白すぎ城」などと報道されました。

で、来年３月のグランドオープンを告知するポスターには「世界に見せたい白がある」というキャッチコピーがありまして、私なんぞの勝手な印象では、やや中途半端なアピールにとどまっているようにも感じられ、その理由としては ＜何故こんなに白かったのか＞ という肝心要の哲学（造形の主旨）についての言及が、少々抜け落ちているからではないでしょうか。…
　
　
思うに、そうした言及を行うには、いわゆる「西欧の美しい城館」との徹底的な比較検討（とりわけ美しさの理由や目的）が不可欠だろうと思えてなりません。

シャンボール城（フランス）

と申しますのも、「西欧の美しい城館」の代表格と言ってもいいシャンボール城やシュノンソー城などがどのように世間から見えていたかと言えば、いずれも広大な森林の中の道を延々と、延々と行った末に、ようやくご覧の城館が姿を現す形でした。

これらは全体が国王の余暇（狩猟）や国賓の接遇等のために設けられた専用の場所で、基本的に地域の領民は一帯からシャットアウトされ、城館は遠くから人々が眺められるような状態ではありませんでした。

そして先のシャンボール城を含めて、絶対王政下のフランス国内では、戦略的な役目を失った城において、王侯貴族らが優雅な城館を建てることが流行し、ご覧のアンボワーズ城のごとく、新たな城館が町から眺めやすい格好の位置に建て込まれたものの、それらは言わば“超豪華な別荘”であって、領民の統治とはほぼ無関係の存在だったと言っていいようです。
　
　
さらには、有名なノイシュヴァンシュタイン城がたいへん眺めやすい“絵に描いたような城”であるのは、ご承知のとおり、近代人のバイエルン国王ルートヴィヒ２世が舞台美術家にデザインさせたロマンティック趣味の「作品」だったからで、これなどは（同様のリヒテンシュタイン城やホーエンツォレルン城等々も含めて）本来ならば、除外して考えるべきものでしょう。(!!…)

ですから、そうしますと、あとは「西欧の美しい城館」といっても、殆どがいわゆる「廃墟としての趣きや塁壁の古色が美しい」といった類いの城になってしまうのです。

その点、我が国の城の「天守」は、白壁や金箔瓦などで鮮やかに天空や城下に向けて雄姿を示すのが建築としての使命であり、同じ “美しい城” であっても、西欧の城館とは本質的に異なる存在だと言えそうでして、このことは解説書やガイドブック等でも案外、触れられていない事柄ではないでしょうか。

例えば「一度は行きたい世界の名城」といったランキング等でも、ご覧の姫路城天守と、シャンボール城と、ノイシュヴァンシュタイン城とが、仲良くトップ１０に並んでいたりもしますが、「何のための美しさだったのか」という観点で申せば、実に三者三様であり、それぞれに美しさの「目的」が違っていたことを忘れるわけにはまいりません。
　
　
そこでもう一度、整理しますと、我が国の「天守」のある大名の居城は、まずは領内最大の軍事拠点であり、ときに苛烈な徴税や使役・徴兵などを強いた行政府の本庁舎でもあり、その目印たる「天守」は領民にとって、本来なら畏怖の対象であったはずです。

なのに、すべての「天守」は美しさ・華やかさ・雄渾さを競うように建造され、その高さ（山頂の立地や高層化）と色彩、破風の多用などで、ひたすら ＜視覚的な存在感＞ を極めることに努めたのです。

これはいったい、何故なのか？？

今回、申し上げたいのは、このことこそ、日本の城だけに起きた「見せる城」という、世界でも稀有な出来事の賜物(たまもの)だろうという点でありまして、強力な攻城砲が出現する直前の、まことに幸運な一時期に、ちょうど織田信長や豊臣秀吉によって一気に「天守」というものが創始され、多くの日本人の目の前にズラリと出現した、という日本史のラッキーなめぐり合わせについての再確認なのです。
　
　
そしてそれほどの「天守」の急激な普及は、まったく新しい建築様式の浸透のスピードとしては、人類史上でも例の無かったもののはずでしょう。

それはおそらく、戦国時代という事実上の分裂国家を再統一するため、信長や秀吉が、奈良時代の一国一寺の国分寺や、足利兄弟による一国一寺の安国寺・利生塔の建立といった国家プロジェクトになぞらえた節も感じられ、彼らの政治手法に立脚して始まったものと考えなければ到底、理解できません。

… ひたすらに ＜人心をつかむ＞ ということ。

織豊大名という「下克上」出身の新興勢力が、日本の旧体制のあらゆる勢力や制度を押さえ込んで行くためには、戦闘や移封で得た領国支配のダメ押し的な一手として、そこの地侍や領民の目線から見て「これは仮設の陣地ではない」「恒久的かつ安定的な支配・統治のための新城である」という天守の絶大な視覚的効果が、大いに威力をふるったのかもしれません。

ということで、小和田先生の「見せる城」論は、日本が世界に向けて、是非とも力強く発信すべき理論であろうと申し上げたいのでありまして、姫路城大天守が何故あんなに白かったのかについても、もっと積極的な説明とアピールを行ってよいのではないでしょうか。

そんなこんなを考えたとき、「天守閣なんてお大名のただの見栄っ張りでしょ…」といった一般の方々の間違った認識は、一刻も早く正さなくてはならないと思いますし、また天守を「ドンジョン」donjon と翻訳する間違いも明らかでありまして、最低でも「テンシュ・タワー」tenshu tower などと訳さなくては、余計な、誤った認識を外国人に与えてしまう危険があると思います。

昨今、世界では１９世紀や２０世紀以来の国境が怪しくなる事態が続発しておりますが、我が国の「天守」は少なくとも、日本という国を戦国時代から中央集権を経て近世社会まで転換させる、という荒業(あらわざ)を押し進める上で、かなり重要な役目を果たした、巧みな ＜政治的アイデア＞ であったはずなのです。
