幻の安土城天主を解明するという “夢” は、あらゆる城郭ファンが、必ず一度はいだくものと言えそうです。

かく申し上げる当人も、城マニアの道にはまり始めた頃はご同様でして、妙な案を思いついては壁にブチ当たって挫折し、「安土城はやはり鬼門だ…」とジンクスのようなものを感じて来ました。

ですが、ある時、静嘉堂文庫蔵『天守指図』は新解釈が可能である！と気づいてからは、不思議とそうした挫折を味わうことも無くなって来たようです。
　
　
さて、安土城天主の解明をさまたげている、二つの大きな謎 “二大迷宮” とも言えるのが…

第一の迷宮：高過ぎる天主台石垣の記録「石くら乃高さ十二間余」という謎

第二の迷宮：『天守指図』の “吹き抜け空間” は本当にあったのか？

今回から順次、この “二大迷宮” を解くための大胆な仮説をご紹介して行きます。

まず今回は「第一の迷宮」ですが、これは歴代のいずれの大先生も例外なく首をかしげた、文字どおり “迷宮入り” した難問中の難問です。

上記の酷似した二つの例のように、『信長記』『信長公記』類の大多数は「安土御天主之次第」という条目の冒頭が決まってこのように始まり、“問題の文言” がその一行目に掲げられているのです。

「石くら乃高さ十二間余」

この「石くら」は今日まで、天主台石垣を指すものと考えられて来ました。

ですから “言葉どおり” に受け取りますと、「高さ十二間余」は京間（六尺五寸間）で２４ｍ余りに達するため、途方もない高さの天主台石垣があったことになり、下図のように、遺構の周辺はとてもそのような石垣を想定できないのです。

こうした事態に、諸先生方は、様々な切り口から “突破口” を見出そうとして来られました。

例えば、『信長記』等の数多い写本をⅠ類～Ⅳ類に分類しますと、Ⅱ類以降はすべて一行目に “問題の文言” があることから…

このような数値が記載されているということは、ⅡⅢ類本の筆者である太田牛一が書き加えたものと考えねばならない。石垣の高さを実測しようとすると、鉛直高を求めるのは難しく、石垣斜面に沿って測ることになるから、鉛直高より数値が大きくなるのは避けられない。しかし鉛直高の倍にもなるはずはないから、牛一は実測もせずに憶測でその値を書いたことになる。この牛一の態度は、ⅡⅢ類本全体の信憑性というものを考えるときに考慮しなくてはならない。

どう考えても「十二間余」を、本丸地表よりの寸法とするには異常である。ちなみに貞享四年（一六八七）に作成された『近江国蒲生郡安土古城図』によると、天主台西側に「石垣高八間」、さらに北側帯曲輪三段にわたって「此方石垣高一間」「北道幅同深一間」「此方石垣高三間」とある。（中略）よって牛一の記す「石くら乃高さ十二間余」とは、周辺帯曲輪を含めた総合的な高さ寸法と理解すれば、天主台石垣関係高さで整合性をもつ。
　
　
つまり宮上先生は太田牛一の記述の「信憑性」に問題の矛先を向け、一方、内藤先生は「周辺帯曲輪を含めた総合的な高さ」と考証されるなど、まったく対極的な指摘がなされているものの、結局のところ、私などには “謎は少しも解けていない” と感じられてならないのです。

こうなるともう、ある種のコロンブスの卵（発想の大転換）が必要であり、例えば、文献の中には “思わぬ変異形” も遺されていて、同じ『信長記』類の写本のひとつ『安土記』という文献には、なんと…

ご覧のとおり「石くら」が「右 蔵」に変わっているのです。

この場合の「右」は、右側のタイトル行「安土御天主之次第」の中の「安土御天主」を指していると解釈する以外はなく、とすると（この文献の）一行目の意味は、「安土御天主」の「蔵」が「高サ十二間余」だと言っていることになります。

しかし、高さ十二間余（２４ｍ余）の蔵！？と聞いて、諸先生方は、即座に「石」を「右」と書き間違えたものと断じられて来ました。

例えば前出の（『天守指図』の）内藤昌先生は、『安土記』をⅣ類本と分類し、それは江戸中期の流布本にすぎないとしています。

Ⅳ類本は、管見する限り江戸中期以降の写本が一般である。（中略）このⅣ類本のみ片仮名であり、しかも「石蔵……」が「右蔵……」に、「……坂井左衛門尉……」が「……酒井左衛門尉……」に、「……法花宗……」が「……法華宗……」になっていたりして、所々に誤写校訂の跡が歴然としており（以下略）
　
　
ここでは「右 蔵」は「誤写校訂」とされています。

でも、その一方で、由緒正しき『信長記』類に “途方もない高さの天主台” が記述されていて、現地の遺構にまるでそぐわず、それが安土城天主の解明の支障になっているという事態はどうすべきなのでしょうか？

そもそも何故、そんな記述が、あらゆる『信長記』等の該当条目の “冒頭” に掲げられているのか？ という指摘があっても良いのではないかと思うのです。

つまり天主台の高さは “冒頭に掲げるべき情報だろうか？” という問題意識です。
　
　
本来なら、冒頭に掲げるべきは、その建築にとって最も特徴的な造形や色彩などを挙げるべきであって、その方が歴史的建造物の素晴らしさが際立つはずです。

（※例えばⅠ類本の『安土日記』は「御殿主ハ七重 悉黒漆也（ことごとく黒うるしなり）」を冒頭に掲げています）

ですから同様に、ⅡⅢ類本も、太田牛一の “ある種の改定” として冒頭の文言が差し替えられたなら、それは本来、もっと建造物の特徴をアピールすべきものだった、はずではないのでしょうか？？
　
　
そこで当ブログの大胆仮説を申し上げますと、太田牛一自筆の「石くら乃高さ十二間余」は言わば “言葉足らずのフライング” であって、牛一が真に言わんとしたことは、まさに江戸中期に “訂正” 流布された「右蔵ノ高サ十二間余」だったのではないか、ということなのです。

すなわち「高さ十二間余の蔵」こそ、安土城天主について語るべき最大のポイントであり、Ⅰ類本の「悉黒漆也」をはるかに上回る特徴であると後になって判明し、それは牛一の手でも文献にしっかりと（やや言葉足らずに？）明記されていた、という推論が浮かび上がるのです。

この話題は次回も引き続き、その驚異の構造がのちの天守に与えた影響など、より幅広い視点からお話したいと存じます。

なお最後に一つ、現代人に馴染みのある「右、何々」という言い方、果たして古文書にもあったのか？という疑問を感じられた方のために、古語辞典からの引用を添えておきます。
